Hello all & welcome to today’s instalment of ‘Startup-sutra’ from Pick My Story. Today we will discuss what can a startup learn from the men in blue.

First things first! A few days ago we posted a story of an AR-centric startup. We would like to thank you all for the huge response! If any of the newcomers haven’t read it already, then check out the story of three young entrepreneurs & their venture called Study Marvel, here!

We are also working on a tale of another startup from Bangalore which is pioneering an evolution in the business analysis sector. Two words- Artificial Intelligence! So stay tuned for that.

Now, coming back to today’s topic, which is all about the men in blue!

Men in Blue, the Indian cricket team!

We suppose it’s safe to assume that every Indian knows how we destroyed Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 & won by whopping 9 wickets. The stadium was filled with one chant, ‘Vee-Ro’ , the clever amalgamation of Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma’s names. The match which was crucial for the Bangladeshi team seemed like a practice match for the men in blue.

This is the team which was long plagued with many betting and match-fixing scandals that have plagued Indian Cricket in the last 2 decades. A bunch of prolific players from the team were caught in several scandals, signifying the darkest time for the Indian cricket team. We lost a bunch of crucial matches. Got out of a couple of championships & in addition to that, the IPL scandals also didn’t help much for the image of the cricket players. A lot of people lost their affinity towards cricket, me being one of them.

However, now in 2017, we are considered among the most cut-throat teams in the world. If yesterday’s match proves anything, then it’s that the men in blue have enhanced themselves so much that a medium tier team is not at all an obstacle for them. What made the Indian cricket team perform the way it is performing now? We did s0me research & found out that there are a thing or two a startup can learn from the Indian team.

Agility:

Once there was a time when ‘Fitness’ is something Indian team was not very religiously keen on keeping. Agreed that none of the Indian players was ever at Umm.., in a position like this, but for quite some time the team was ridden with injuries & lack of fitness.

The constant injuries & lack of the efforts towards fitness made the Indian team crumble a lot of times. But now, not only 4 out of 10 fittest players in the world are the men in blue, but the list is topped by Captain Cool himself. The team coach came up with a workout regime which made the team leaner, meaner & fitter.

Agility is a very pivotal characteristic for a startup. For any business idea. it is very important to acquire a framework or a business model in entrepreneurial terms. A mechanism which will keep the startup at its optimum condition & perform. Any new business idea carries some extra weight in the beginning. Just so that the extra baggage should not weigh you down, you should go for a business model which is all of these 3 things:

BusinessPlanAgility

For creating a business model like this, you need to center it around a good business plan. You can check out one of our old blogs in which we have discussed about business plan & how it is a key to a sustainable business.

The Men in Blue Team Structure:

The Indian cricket team consists of 8 hard-hitting batsmen, 2 all rounders, 5 bowlers. As you can see in the image below, the team has the perfect balance of the skills, expertise & sportsmanship required to win any match.

For a startup as well, the performance parameters are not just ROI, expand, time to reach the break-even point, but also the team members. Every team member has a positive or negative impact on team capabilities. Hence, while picking up people to be a part of your startup squad considerations. There are few factors which every entrepreneur must pay attention to while structuring their team:TeamBuilding

Starting a small business or stepping in any kind of venture is basically signing up yourself for a championship trophy. You will have to face people from your all over the world, win matches to slowly progress further, collect trophies to establish yourself as the leaders. Considering that the men in blue of our cricket team are winning all over the world, you can certainly acquire some of the traits mentioned above.

We will soon come to know how effective Indian Team is, in the much-anticipated match between India & Pakistan which is just around the corner. Let us know who do you think will win the match!
